Healing for all
At a time when we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the NHS, the two stories of healing in chapter 5 of Mark’s gospel are particularly apt.
In their encounters with Jesus, Jairus and the nameless woman in the crowd show us two parallel moments of intimate drama. Jairus was an important man; a leader in the synagogue. The woman – ritually unclean for 12 years because of her haemorrhaging – was a penniless outcast. Here we see Jesus laying down the foundation of healing available to all… a healing provided through touch.
